"The Mountain Man" Painting Original Art (1979). Worlds are colliding here! This handsome (and funny) painting of a couple of bear trappers who catch more than expected was done during the period when Disney revoked the license Barks had obtained to paint Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge, and was accepting commissions for a series he called "Famous Figures of History as They Might Have Looked Had Their Genes Gotten Mixed with Waterfowl." It was commissioned by animation writer and Underground cartoonist Bob Foster, who had requested his own creation, Myron Moose, be included in the scene; that's Myron in the background, pointing to a bear cub he has trapped! The art is in ink and watercolor on illustration board. |

Painting called ''Duck Rogers'' (1979). This painting, which had as a working title "This Nude Duck is a Dish", is featured on pages 121-122 of the Carl Barks' Animal Quackers full-color book. "Duck Rogers" is a take-off on America's first popular newspaper comic strip spaceman, Buck Rogers. Barks was late to discover that a Warner Brothers cartoon had previously been issued under a similar name ("Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2 Century", in 1953), and was concerned with copyright issues. For that reason, he would not sign his name to the painting; however, he was agreeable to sign the accompanying finished pencil drawing. "Duck Rogers" is the only futuristic character in Barks' series of 53 non-Disney Duck paintings. Buck is shown in the process of saving a curvaceous "dinner-to-be" -- a stripped-down maiden in distress. Barks has the three-headed "dragon-style" alien chef preparing dessert and the main course all at the same time. The "dessert" has a humorous perkiness that only Carl Barks could create. |

Magica De Spell "Vesuvius Airline Frequent Flier" Pastel Drawing Original Art (circa 1980s). Carl Barks created this original watercolor depicting how Scrooge's nemesis, Magica De Spell, might have made the trip from Mount Vesuvius, Italy to Duckburg. Barks demonstrates how fast it would have been had Magica used twin-broom power instead of her usual single stick. |
