A famous cover
Many things have been written and said about the first issue of the Weekly in 1952. The opening
story, featuring Donald as fireman, is for instance the most reprinted story in Holland.
But did anyone wonder what the cover is supposed to mean? Okay, Donald "carries" a watch. And
the watches were the big prize in the contest in this first issue. But why is Donald pointing upwards,
and what is he looking at?
A look at the original Swedish cover (from 1948) gives us a bit more information.
Apparently, Donald likes the fact that he now was his own magazine: he points to, and looks at, its logo.
In the Swedish version, the logo is as wide as the magazine, so Donald is not looking "in the air"...
This version of the cover was used on the first issues in Sweden, Denmark, and Norway, a few years before.
The Donald is taken from a newspaper strip by Al Taliaferro. The nephews are from a story by Carl Barks.
An editor has composed a cover out of this.
What we see on the cover of Dutch Weekly #1 is therefore a third-generation product: the Dutch
editor added the watch, and gave the cover its new colours.
