Karel Blaft
In 1974, it was only a few years ago that the Dutch editors discovered that Carl Barks made all those wonderful
Duck stories. The first mentioning of his name in Holland is in 1971, in the hippie magazine Aloha,
in an article written by Evert Geradts (he would later write many Duck stories himself).
After that, Barks is mentioned in fanzines, and (starting in 1975) in the album series De Beste Verhalen van Donald Duck.
In the Weekly itself, Barks is not mentioned before 1986 (in an advertisement), and in 1994 (in a short article about Barks' visit
to Holland).
But the name Barks already appears before that in the Weekly, albeit hidden in the stories. For instance in the story
"Het museumbezoek" from Weekly 46, 1974 (drawn by Windig and De Jong), see the panel below.
In 1976, Barks is a cowboy in the translation of one of his own stories. On a center fold in 1976, one of the books carries the title
Karel Blaft, which is a literal translation of Carl Barks...
Barks drew himself on several occasions in his own stories. And sometimes his name appeared in an American story or on a cover.
But these names did not appear in the Dutch translations.
