Funny things

Leenheer waste paper

The story below was written by Frits Leenheer and drawn by Jaap Stavenuiter. Both were involved in the amateur comic magazine "Razzafrazz".
The name "Habbakrazz" refers to this magazine, but is also similar to the Dutch word "habbekrats", meaning "cheap". "Oud papier" means "Waste paper".

Dutch export

The stories that are produced in Holland, are being used in Disney comic magazines everywhere in the world, nowadays. The picture below is a page from "Mickey Mouse" number 25, 1996, from India. It shows the first page of a Daisy story drawn by Mau Heymans.

The special thing about India is, that until recently (2003) it was the only country in the world that published Disney comics in the English language. The Americans had to do without, for several years (not counting the digest-size Disney Adventures), till Gemstone finally started. The British currently don't have a Disney comic either.

Funny detail in the translation below: the original Dutch words nagelvijl and hagelslag look a bit alike, but their literal translations (nail file/chocolate sprinkles) don't... (Thanks to Alexander Hajenius who noticed this)

Here are 2 more scans from the same comic. All 3 scans were made by Jan Follak.

Jan wrote the following about this (on August 2, 1999):

Some month ago there was a discussion on the [DCML] mailing-list on English Disney comics, prompted by the fact that Gladstone had stopped publishing in the USA. Someone brought up that India might be a place to look for them, but nobody could tell if English was the comic-language in India. So I asked a friend from India if she could get me a Disney comic-book to find out. Now I've got one and here's what it looks like: It has 44 pages and a larger size than the usual comic-book, like the cancelled "Mickey and friends" that was published in England several years ago. My issue is from 1996
