Funny things

A jump into the deep

The very first story of Carl Barks, which he drew together with Jack Hannah, is printed in episodes in Weeklies 30 through 40. On two occasions, someone didn't pay attention, because panels were printed upside-down! In the example below, Donald jumps "up" from the plank.

This version of the story came from Germany, where the panels already had been printed upside-down.

Maybe you also saw this in DD 43 of 2002. They took it over from this website.

Funny things

Long beaks, short beaks

In Scandinavia (and Germany) they started reprinting old Barks stories already in the 1960s. But they thought the beaks in those old stories were too long, so they shortened them! Fortunately, these versions have never been used in Holland.

Actually, except for one: the Dutch editors wanted to reprint the love letter story, but they (apparently) didn't have a better version available. For the Dutch reprint they had the beaks lengthened again! In some cases, the beaks are even a bit too long, like in the example below.

In order: the original version (American WDC 111), the Swedish multilated version (Kalle Anka 1969-40), the Dutch "restored" version (Weekly 1976-26).

Funny things

Two redrawn pages in a Bradbury story

When the Dutch printed a Jack Bradbury story (S 64127), apparently pages 2 and 8 were missing. They had Eddy van Schuylenburg redraw the two pages, making the flow of the story quite different!

The black and white scans are the original, as printed in Sweden (thanks to Joakim Gunnarsson for the scans).
The colour scans are the Dutch version, "Boter bij de vis!", as printed in Weekly 1976-38.
